When I found out that I’d be watching and reviewing Not Today, I was really excited because its themes of poverty, human trafficking and humanitarianism are extremely dear to my heart. Even it tagline – “none of us are free if one of us is enslaved” – struck me deeply – it’s almost a motto that I live by. Not Today is an honest and action-packed movie that both will touch your heart and captivate your emotions.
Not Today tells the story of a spoiled young man, Caden, who is running from God. When Caden decides to take a pleasure trip to party it up in India, God intervenes in a way that changes Caden forever. On his first night in India, Caden meets a man and his daughter who are starving to death, but Caden refuses to give them money or to help them in any way. When the man unknowingly sells his daughter to a brothel, Caden finds himself on a journey to rescue her – a journey that brings him back into the arms of an all-loving God, and opens his eyes to the scarring world of human trafficking.
Not Today is beyond excellent – it provides a truthful gaze at the injustice that still exists in today’s world. I appreciated that the movie wasn’t graphic, despite the graphic nature of the topic. The characters were so easy to relate to, and their struggles were so believable and real. My only complaints? The subtitles (for the parts of the movie spoken in Hindi) were far too artistic and hard to read, which was distracting, and Caden’s relationship with his girlfriend was noticeably forced. That aside, I honestly couldn’t look away from the screen for the whole movie! Not Today is absolutely worth watching: it will inspire you to change the world… and remind you that with God’s help, you can.
