Elizabeth’s Gift begins with the tragic death of a very loved little girl. Six months later, her parents are still struggling to move on with their lives and to find any kind of joy. When the mother begins volunteering at a homeless shelter, she begins to have day-time visions of her daughter standing in the street. By following the little girl, she is led to discover another homeless young girl whom she learns to care for and eventually rescues.
The movie had some dark moments: the very emotional death of Elizabeth, the gang members trying to protect their underground gun trade, the life of the homeless people, and the husband’s angry outbursts. In fact, if you are looking for a lighthearted, feel-good movie, this probably shouldn’t be your first choice.
The acting and dialogue were not very impressive. And a few of the elements in the storyline were quite unrealistic. For example, just two weeks after losing her mother, the homeless girl is perfectly happy to be adopted by another set of parents and her transition into their family is seamless! I don’t think so. Also, the sightings of the woman’s dead daughter in a flowing white dress holding a white rose was a little creepy and ghost-like. The focus on angels in the movie made me a little worried. The movie implied that when people die, they become angels and that certain people are angels on earth. This vague teaching disturbed me a little, since the Bible is clear that angels are beings that were never human.
I’ll give this movie 2.5 stars for the artistic way that the scenes were shot, and it’s effectiveness in drawing emotion, but only 2.5 stars for its confusing theological content, poor storyline and somewhat poor acting.
